In 1965, Peace Street Hardware and Garden Supply was started by Hoyle and Margaret Clay. We sold hardware, seed, and plants. We began growing plants out of greenhouses behind our home for the retail store. Basic landscaping services such as spraying ornamentals and pruning were also performed. Started selling and servicing power equipment for the homeowner market.
In 1970, the business moved to its present location and changed its name to Clays Garden Supply. Clays became a full service garden center selling trees, shrubs, and bedding plants. We continued growing plants such as geraniums, poinsettias, hanging baskets, and bedding plants. We built a loyal following based on better quality plants, expert lawn and chemical advice, and service to the customer that could not be found at the mass merchant.
In 1982, Jerry Clay, son of Hoyle and Margaret, took over management of the business after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in business administration.
In 1984, Phyllis Clay, Jerrys wife, joins the business as office manager.
In 2001, Clays Garden Supply changes its name to Clays Power Equipment and changes its mission from garden supplies to specializing in outdoor power equipment sales and service. We started selling to commercial landscape contractors and broadened the lines of power equipment we were selling. We also started selling to large municipalities such as City of Raleigh, City of Durham, Town of Chapel Hill, and Wake County.
In 2008, Clays Power Equipment expands into the sports turf industry. Clays is one of 10 dealers selected nationally as an exclusive provider of Gravely Turf products. Clays also adds reel grinding to its product offering. We offer local service of equipment and reels with parts availability and over 30 years of combined service experience. Products include triplex mowers, wide area rotaries, pull behind gang reels, Locke reel mowers, National 8400, and turf products such as stadium vacuums, sprayers, infield conditioner, and utility vehicles.
In 2011, Clays Power Equipment opens its second location located at 1206 Broad Street, Fuquay-Varina, NC 27526. We are excited to offer the same quality products and expert service to all customers in southern Wake County that we have been offering since 1965.
